PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Meet Newt, a 1-year-old fox red Labrador retriever trained to find turtle species at risk in Rhode Island.
It’s springtime. Nesting season for turtles.
But we’re seeing fewer of them because of loss of habitat and being hit while crossing roads.
“We see a lot of mortality in turtles this time of year and sadly, it’s all female turtles carrying the next generation and now sadly we have a poaching crisis,” said Lou Perrotti, director of conservation programs at Roger Williams Park Zoo.
It’s why the zoo is using a new partner to help turtles out.
